    I remember listening to this on School House Rock every Saturday morning. I did not connect the dots until now, that it was his voice behind most of those songs. Great memories and lessons.

    Hold up. Are those snares on the top head?! I was a jazz drumming student and I never once witnessed that. Is that more common in the jazz community? It's super interesting.

    • @dirtyketchup
      @dirtyketchup 11 дней назад

      No, he definitely had that snare drum just completely upside for the opening intro (clear head on top), and made some super interesting sounds. Then flipped it back upright at some point during the song (coated head back on top). I'll have to rewatch again to see if I can find out how he managed to flip the drum over. Also, if you listen at 10:30, he's doing that awesome hi-hat bell groove with the rim knocks on the snare, and it all sounds pretty standard. Then at 10:36 you can hear a distinct change in the rim knocks. At first I thought he was flamming something with his right hand, but I figured out what he's doing and it is really cool. He changes the angle of his left stick so that it's dragging along the rim of the tom before hitting the snare rim, and he continues doing that until 11:28. Such a creative drummer with his sounds. It gives those rim knocks suck a more fat and pronounced groove. Ugh, I could listen to those sounds all day.

      @dirtyketchup 11 дней назад

      Ok, so the snare flip-over must have happened off-camera at 5:35. Right after that you can hear the snare has a much throatier sound through the rest of the song. Such powerful creativity with something so simple. Getting so much more sound out of a single piece of equipment. I especially love how he drags his stick across the snare threads at 4:40 (and I think he does it somewhere closer to the intro as well at 4:07). I would have never thought to try that.

    I love this album, which I bought at a terrific gig that Eden did at the Duvel Blues Festival in Belgium. She’s an amazing performer and I was blown away by her powerful voice, great piano playing, and the songs themselves. Don’t miss the chance to see her live if you can and by all means get this album, which is very energizing.

    Seconding the reference to the extraordinary "Night Music" series - I like to think that those three years made Sanborn a better saxophonist & musician - just by playing next to Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, John Zorn... all his albums prior to the Hal Willner-produced "Another Hand" were fun and enjoyable, but everything he released after that took his R&B-influenced sound to a much higher level (and beyond), and I cherish those.

      i was able to see david in concert with james taylor and then again in a small club where he signed my" taking off" album and my son's mouthpiece.he was one of a kind.he was like coltrane when he played u knew it was him.the first time I heard him was on a rock station k-rock he played on a joe beck album and the song was starfire. it was the best solo i ever heard and i had to find out who he was so i brought the album.after that i brought most of his albums and other performers albums where he was featured.when my son told me i was heartbroken and had a tear in my eye.
